The Vatican has announced the appointment of Joseph Lin Yuntuan as the auxiliary bishop of Fuzhou, marking the first such appointment under Pope Leo XIV. This move reflects the new pope’s endorsement of a controversial agreement regarding bishop nominations established by his predecessor with Beijing.

The Holy See expressed satisfaction with China’s recognition of Lin’s appointment, which was made on June 5. The statement highlighted that this event is a significant step in the ongoing dialogue between the Vatican and Chinese authorities.

Currently, the Vatican and China’s Communist government do not maintain formal diplomatic relations, as the Holy See recognizes Taiwan, which Beijing considers part of its territory. However, a historic agreement in 2018 allowed both parties to have input in the selection of bishops in China, home to approximately 12 million Catholics. This deal has faced criticism within the Church, with concerns that it grants the Communist government too much control over the Catholic community.

Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 after a 12-year tenure leading the Church, had renewed this agreement multiple times, most recently in October 2024. Following his death, the Chinese government appointed two bishops in Shanghai and Xinxiang, a move perceived by commentators as an effort by the Communist Party to assert its authority over the Church during the transitional period.

Lin’s appointment signifies a notable development in the evolving relationship between the Vatican and China, highlighting both the challenges and opportunities for collaboration in the future.
