The Christian Association in the 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has called on Nigerians in positions of authority, particularly political leaders, to make a “double sacrifice” for the nation during the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
Rev. John Joseph Hayab, the Chairman of the association, delivered this message in a Sallah address directed at the Muslim faithful, highlighting the significance of the season, which honors Prophet Ibrahim’s obedience and willingness to sacrifice for God. He urged both leaders and citizens to embody the spirit of sacrifice as a means of fostering national unity and responsibility.
In his statement, Hayab emphasized that this period should inspire leaders to act in accordance with their constitutional obligations and moral responsibilities. He pointed out the pressing issues facing Nigeria, including insecurity, economic distress, and social disillusionment, stating, “The country is groaning under the weight of insecurity, economic distress, and social disillusionment.”
Hayab lamented that many Nigerians live in fear due to the prevailing climate of uncertainty, which allows enemies of peace to act without restraint. He urged political leaders to fulfill their promises and take tangible steps to improve the lives of citizens, asserting, “It is no longer enough to issue statements or make promises.”
He called for urgent action from the government to address the conditions that have led to widespread doubt regarding its commitment to the people. “Let the leadership act decisively so that Nigerians will no longer have reasons to question or complain,” he stated.
The CAN Chairman also highlighted the necessity for the Federal Government to take steps aimed at restoring public confidence and healing “our national wounds.” He encouraged Nigerians to use this solemn period of Eid-el-Kabir to pray for the peace and unity of the country while reaching out to the less privileged in the true spirit of the celebration.
In closing, Rev. Hayab expressed heartfelt greetings to the Muslim community, wishing them a joyful and spiritually rewarding Eid-el-Kabir. He reiterated the importance of fostering peaceful coexistence and urged all religious and community leaders to avoid making statements or taking actions that could deepen divisions within the nation.
