The Right Reverend (Dr) James Odedeji, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Lagos West, has issued a powerful call to Nigerian leaders to confront the issues of poor governance and the escalating hardship faced by citizens. His remarks came during a sermon at the 2nd Session of the 9th Synod, held at the Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral in Ikeja, Lagos.
Bishop Odedeji’s address painted a stark picture of a nation teetering on the edge of collapse, plagued by economic decline and global tensions. He emphasized the need for leaders to act as “beacons of light” amid these challenges. “We are summoned by God’s Word to shine as lights in a world clouded by selfishness, deception, and despair,” he stated, urging Christians to reject corruption, injustice, and compromise.
Highlighting the current cost of living crisis, the Bishop expressed deep concern over the alarming depreciation of the naira and the pervasive atmosphere of hopelessness that many Nigerians experience. “We demand responsible governance, not excuses,” he asserted, calling for urgent government action to address the cries of the people. He also urged investment in the state’s growth, lamenting political violence and the apparent inability of leaders to collaborate for the greater good.
The theme of the Synod, “Be a Beacon of Light,” underscores the necessity for courageous leadership and moral clarity. “This year’s Synod theme defines why God has called us to be the world. It is a call to rise,” he asserted, urging attendees to take action rather than conform to the status quo.
Bishop Odedeji’s message resonates with many Nigerians who are disillusioned by the current state of governance. His plea for accountability and transformative action highlights the urgent need for leaders to prioritize the welfare of their constituents.
