The Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev. Callistus Onaga, has urged Nigerians to embrace true repentance and reject corrupt practices this Lenten Season. In his message delivered in Enugu, he emphasized the importance of the 2025 Lent, which begins today, Ash Wednesday, and lasts for 40 days until Holy Saturday, April 20.

Onaga highlighted that Lent is a time for fasting, prayer, and almsgiving, aimed at fostering a deeper connection with God. He encouraged individuals to engage in self-reflection to identify their shortcomings and sins. The bishop stressed that Christians should commit to fasting throughout the season to prepare for the paschal mystery of Christ.

He also called on the nation, its leaders, and citizens to turn away from cheating and corrupt practices, urging everyone to seek reconciliation and forgiveness. According to Onaga, the observance of Ash Wednesday serves as a reminder of human mortality and the need for humility before God. He implored Nigerians to make sacrifices, such as reducing indulgences in food and drink, as part of their commitment to the Lenten practice.
