The leadership of the First Baptist Church (FBC) in Garki, Abuja, has categorically denied allegations of financial misconduct and forgery against its former Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. Israel Akanji. These allegations have been circulating on social media, prompting the church to issue a formal statement to clarify the situation.

In their statement, signed by Trustee Dr. Emmanuel Chibuzor Ibe and Church Secretary Deacon Adedamola Akanbi, the church described the claims as “misinformation, rumours, and fabricated stories” . They emphasized that the church’s financial records are intact, regularly audited, and managed by qualified personnel. The church assured its members that there has been no misappropriation of funds or property during Rev. Akanji’s tenure, which lasted 22 years before he transitioned to lead the Nigerian Baptist Convention .

The church also addressed concerns regarding the alleged forgery of its constitution, asserting that all documents filed with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) remain unaltered. Furthermore, they refuted claims that any legal actions had been initiated against the church or its leadership, attributing such rumors to “evil forces” attempting to malign and harass the church and Rev. Akanji .

Despite the controversy, the church reaffirmed its support for Rev. Akanji, highlighting his contributions to the growth of the First Baptist Church, Garki, into a prominent institution within the Nigerian Baptist Convention. The leadership expressed gratitude to its members and supporters for their concern and reiterated their commitment to transparency and integrity in church operations .
